LOUISVILLE, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Solid Power, Inc. (Nasdaq: SLDP), a leading U.S.-based developer of solid-state battery technology, today announced that it has begun commissioning MOBIUS™, its continuous manufacturing pilot line for sulfide-based solid electrolyte. Previously referred to as the SP2.5 Continuous Manufacturing Pilot Line, MOBIUS™ has reached substantial completion of construction at Solid Power’s SP2 facility in Thornton, Colorado, and materials are now being introduced into the line. MOBIUS™ supports Solid Power’s objective to manufacture and sell electrolyte to Tier 1 battery manufacturers and automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
“Bringing the promise of MOBIUS™ to fruition is a proud moment for our team and a critical step in positioning Solid Power for commercial readiness and long-term stockholder value creation,” said John Van Scoter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Solid Power, Inc. “The name MOBIUS™ reflects what sets this line apart: continuous production designed to deliver the process control, repeatability, and scale our partners expect from a commercial electrolyte supplier. With MOBIUS™, we expect to increase our electrolyte production capacity at SP2 in Thornton, Colorado, by 150%, and we look forward to bringing the line into full operation and supporting material qualification with our partners.”
Solid Power has also completed SAT for primary powder processing on MOBIUS™ and expects to complete full SAT by the end of October 2026. SAT is an activity performed with Solid Power and the equipment manufacturer in parallel to confirm that the equipment works as specified and designed before progressing into production. With commissioning underway, Solid Power continues to work toward plant validation and operational startup, which remain planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
MOBIUS™ is designed to add 45 metric tons of solid electrolyte production capacity per year. Following commissioning, total electrolyte production capacity at the SP2 facility is expected to reach approximately 75 metric tons per year. MOBIUS™ will operate alongside the facility’s existing batch production lines, using what Solid Power believes is the world’s first continuous manufacturing process for sulfide-based solid electrolyte.
MOBIUS™ plays a central role in Solid Power’s commercial readiness. Solid Power believes continuous manufacturing is fundamental to achieving the volume, consistency, and cost required for commercial electrolyte supply, and expects continuous production to deliver tighter process control and more consistent output than batch processing. MOBIUS™ will also support material qualification with automotive and cell manufacturing partners as Solid Power advances toward commercial electrolyte supply.
MOBIUS™ was built as part of a project supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through an assistance agreement providing up to $50 million in federal funding.
About Solid Power, Inc.
Solid Power is developing solid-state battery technology to enable the next generation of batteries for the fast-growing EV and other markets. Solid Power’s core technology is its electrolyte material, which Solid Power believes can enable extended driving range, longer battery life, improved safety, and lower cost compared to traditional lithium-ion. Solid Power’s business model – selling its electrolyte to cell manufacturers and licensing its cell designs and manufacturing processes – distinguishes the company from many of its competitors who plan to be commercial battery manufacturers. Ultimately, Solid Power endeavors to be a leading producer and distributor of sulfide-based solid electrolyte material for powering both EVs and other applications.
